Development Team in Scrum

If you have just started your team using TaaS or created one independently, you will need Scrum to manage tasks in small pieces. Scrum is a lightweight and agile project management framework that provides you with strong values, principles, and practices every team needs to survive. The development team in Scrum monitors everything and inspects functions, and learns through feedback to reduce waste.

No matter what type of team you are managing, Scrum’s principles can be applied to it as it describes a set of meetings, roles, and tools to help you manage the team. No worries about your team’s special needs cause Scrum will provide you with the right practices designed for your team. There are three different roles optimized in Scrum: Product Owner, Scrum Master, and Scrum Development team. In the following, we will elaborate on the development team in Scrum.

A little on Scrum

The Scrum Guide describes Scrum as a lightweight enterprise-level framework that helps you generate value through adaptive practices and solutions for different problems. Assuming that you create a team following Tuckman’s stages of group development is not the best time to know Scrum since, without it keeping your team at stage four is difficult.

An ideal team in an organization is solid and aligns with the company’s mission. Every leader dream of a cross-functional team like rugby players. The name ‘Scrum’ derives from the scrum formation at the beginning of a rugby game. Look how integrated and dedicated they are. Imagine leading a rugby team in a suit created to accomplish what others cannot. The Scrum is the best tool you will ever find to manage your team and score.

No matter what type of industry you are working in, Scrum is the best to deliver innovative products or services that your customer would love to use.

The Scrum Development Team

The development team in Scrum is an autonomous team consisting of people with different functional expertise working toward a common purpose. These people are the core of Scrum, as they are accountable for building products and services and accomplishing the end goal in every sprint.

To understand the importance of the Scrum development team, the power of this team makes a project successful.

Role and function of the development team

The development team in Scrum performs many duties during every sprint. Get familiar with these duties to have a fruitful team:

Sprint Execution

The main role of the Scrum development team is to perform sprint execution. To perform sprint execution, the development team sets meetings to reach a sprint goal. This team is self-organized, and the member makes decisions collectively. During meetings, the team will work on designs, buildings, integration, and testing possible solutions to fulfill tasks and create a product or provide a service that will make your customer delightful.

Adaptive solutions

One of the most important features of the Scrum framework is its ability to inspect and adapt every day. To do so, the team monitor and inspect the progress to see how close they are to the final goal. They look to find growth, and based on that, they try to adapt practices for the next day. This gradual and continuous adaptation keeps the team vigilant and on track.

Products

One of the responsibilities of the Development team in Scrum is to meet the sprint through gradual meeting and adaption. On the other hand, they also need to work on the product grooming. The product is the owner’s responsibility; the development team even assists him in product grooming. In general, 10% of the development team in Scrum’s capacity is dedicated to this task.

Sprint

The development team in Scrum holds a meeting at the beginning of every sprint to create a plan and determine the goal. The owner and the Scrum master attend this meeting as well. In this meeting, they will assess the capacity of the development team and the amount of work they should do to meet the determined goal. As the Scrum |Master and the product owner are present in the meeting, they can answer any possible question and help plan the sprint.

Product and Process

The development team needs to inspect the spring review and sprint retrospective by the end of each spring. During the spirit review, the team will clarify the accomplishment and the journey in the spring. They do this in a meeting along with the Scrum Master and the product owner, and stakeholders, if there are any. This way, everyone can review the progress, comment on the work and journey, and collectively inspect the sprint. In the Sprint retrospective,

the development team in Scrum holds a meeting with Scrum Master and the product owner, and by doing so, they can review how they executed the sprint. They would inspect the process and technical improvement.

How should a development team in Scrum be?

The Scrum development team is responsible for a great number of things. They should be qualified and well-equipped to perform the task. Here will discuss the characteristics of this team.

  1. the team is self-organized

As a product owner or leader, you do not have to tell them what to do next; they are always ready for tomorrow. They can figure tasks out and do not need a guideline.

No one is telling the development team how much they should work to meet the sprint and how they should change the process to meet the goal. They make decisions on their own. The only observer in the team is the Scrum Master that will monitor the process and ensure the team is on track.

  1. The team is cross-functional,

You will be amazed at the team’s capacity at first sight. The team members are powerful together, and each has different capabilities, and together, they can solve complex problems. They are cable enough to only look for answers within the team. This way, they are independent as a team and do not need to rely on other sources.

  1. No title

You never hear that one member of the team is the leader. Everyone on the team is just a team member who works towards a common goal. There are no titles given, irrespective of the work they do in the team.

  1. There are no sub-teams in the development team.

There are no different types of teams within the development team. For instance, you will not hear about the UI team, testing team, etc. The development team in Scrum is a multi-task, and they can function under different criteria, and there is no need to have a sub-team in a development team.

  1. The team is self-reliant.

It means that all team members have acquired in-depth knowledge of one subject and are experts in that field. For example, they are all experts in UI development, and each has a broad knowledge of other skills, but they are not experts in those criteria. This way, everyone is equal in a team, and the team is self-reliant.

  1. Accountable

It is amazing to see how developed the team member is to work. They are accountable and responsible and a powerful rugby team. You might even hear them saying all for one and one for all. They are collectively in charge of meeting the sprint goal, and the wins and failures are not for a team member but for the whole team.

They are indecent and do not rely on others to perform a task, so they hold full responsibility.

  1. Transparent communication

We are talking about a team in which everyone speaks the same language. Everyone is an expert in the same criteria as the others, so they have a lot in common on the other hand, there is no given title irrespective of their role, so they communicate clearly and without any ambiguities. The development team in Scrum is the heart of the whole process, so they should be able to speak and communicate freely. It means they do not need to waste time writing emails to ask questions; team members can walk to another colleague and close out a discussion in a few minutes.

How big should a development team be?

According to Scrum’s description, a perfect development team size is between 3 to 9 team members excluding the product owner and the Scrum Master. If you are not ready to build a team on your own, you can always use a Team as a Service (TaaS) and hire a perfect development team to make an upside-down change in your business. Having a Scrum development team is all you need to achieve those tasks that take forever to solve. A development team will be the central power in your organization.
